Could someone just explain the concept of RAID to me, its advantages, and possibly recommend such a card and hard drives, assuming I want to build a pretty high-end system?

Gracias.

Raid is a brand of pesticides by the Johnson Wax company. It comes in an explosive arosol can, usually 450g. Raid does not contain any Chlorofluorocarbons.

Raid is non-staining and non-flammable. It kills mosquitoes, fleas, flying moths, gnats, spiders, bedbugs, sow bugs, carpet beetles, centipedes, aphids, leafhoppers, ants, silverfish, and wasps on contact.

For Indoor use:

Flying insects: Shake before using. Close all doors and windows. Spray Raid up in the air with a sweeping motion, keeping about 1 metre from interior walls, fabrics and furnature. Keep room closed for 15 minutes. Ventilate sealed areas after treatment. About 12 seconds of spraying clears an average sized room (28 cubic metres).

Crawling insects: Must be hit by spray to be killed.

Fleas: Spray infested area such as pet's bed and resting quarters.

Bedbugs: Take beds apart. Spray frames, joints, matresses, particularly tufts and seams, floorboards, mouldings and baseboards.

For Outdoor use on flowers and shrubs:
Spray with slow, sweeping motion, keeping 30 to 45 cm away from all plants. Avoid wetting. A light spray kills pests effectively. Spray only when air is still and temperature is under 32 degrees Celcius. Do not spray in direct sunlight, early morning or evening preferred. Use with caution on young plants and new growth.

KEEP OUT OF THE REACH OF CHILDREN
Cover fish bowls and remove pets for one hour when spraying rooms. Avoid inhalation. Cover food and food untensils. Do not spray directly on skin or pets.

KEEP FROM FREEZING. CONTENTS UNDER PRESSURE.
Do not puncture or incinerate container or store at temperatures over 50 degrees Celcius. Do not place in hot water or near radiators, stoves or other sources of heat.

First Aid: If on skin, wash thoroughly with soap and water. If in eyes, flush with water. If irritation persists, obtain medical attention. If accidentally swallowed, obtain medical attention immediately.

Disposal: When empty, press button to release pressure, discard in household garbage.

Guarantee: Pyrethrins 0.25%, Technical Piperonyl Butoxide 1.05%.

Some of us here curse the spray, yes... *hisses*

For most people, a motherboard that supports RAID 0, 1, or 0+1 suffices. Promise makes good add-in cards as well... although the RAID 5 market is a bit trickier to get a good handle on.
