Been having a blast picking up various old games on Good Old Games .com lately. Enjoying that they are fairly cheap, lots of old classics and favorites, download-able installers that doesn't require cd-roms or various checks etc, and the fact that it is faster to download the game than find my old original cd's anyways...

Anyways, I actually thought about it, and searched for OMF the other day and found neither of them. Kinda pity, omf2097 being freeware now would serve as an excellent free title (Like Tyrian 2000 already is on gog!), and I was actually considering buying omfbg on there just to get to try it again.

I don't know how complicated the process of getting a game on gog is, but what would be the chances ? Anyways this would in the end require a response from Rob Elam, so just on that fact alone I deem it unlikely in the extreme.

edit: I added my vote to the Wishlist here: http://www.gog.com/wishlist/games/one_must_fall_2097
edit2: and here: http://www.gog.com/wishlist/games/one_must_fall_battleground

I'd say the changes for OMF:BG is slim to none... especially since it doesn't work correctly on Windows 7. For whatever reason the menu doesn't draw so you can't even guess-navigate the menu; it just doesn't exist.

Which is a bit of a shame, really - considering how CPU-hungry the AI is in this game, I really would love to put it through its paces on my current rig.

I'm just not installing XP again for the purposes of finding out.

Well, I'd still have the system overhead of Win7, but it's better than a clean install. Now to browse the VirtualBox documentation.

You'd be surprised how well the VM WindowsXP works in Windows 7. If you have Windows 7 Professional or higher, you should have it for free and just need to set it up.

I haven't done it yet myself due to limited HD space on my SSD. ... Maybe I should buy another SSD drive to store other apps on... hmm... That just might be the ticket [/end thinking out loud]

Good luck with your winxp experiment.

Yeah, I have Win7 Pro on my desktop, and again, might be limited by space on the SSD. Maybe that just gives me more incentive to get a newer, larger one (still running an original OCZ Vertex 60GB).

Yep. All my thinking out loud cost me about $250 on this: Twisted Evil
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227916

And it's supposed to come with a free copy of FarCry 3.

This is the one I've had my eye on: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820147193

Then again, the free copy of Far Cry 3 might trump the $10 price difference (and likely minor performance advantage) the Samsung drive has.

In the meantime, it looks like it let me install Windows XP Mode on one of my mechanical hard drives, just have to set it up.

Update: There is no virtualization of graphics display adapters in Win7's WinXP Mode, so OMFBG crashes out on startup due to being unable to setup D3D context.

Curses! Oh well, it was worth a try at least.

That it was.

Now on to VirtualBox. (Not sure I still have my WinXP install disc, so I may have to dig into the archives and set up a Win2000 VM with it...)

I have my install disc, the problem is when I try to install it on new computers it really wants to update from long dead servers. So I have to settle with my install from back in the day on an older PC.

That shouldn't happen anymore. I have reanimated the omfdownloads.com server. So it should be able to connect and get the fines necessary for updates.

For the record:
Win7 built-in XP VM doesn't work - it uses a Trident S3 "GPU" and OMF fails to launch.

What are the chances of getting the raw code to rewrite the keyboard input aspect of the game? Since that's what is broken. I know, its a long shot with Rob being gone from the community. Preservation is paramount!
