AMD is buying ATI. Now they can produce their own chipsets. W00h00! _________________

The question now is whether an AMD/ATI chipset is going to push enough performance out of their processors to compete with Intel. I'm leaning towards "no". _________________ "The unofficial first person to edit their sig since 2009! Possibly 2008."

Well, AMD has a lot of things that can be improved on their architecture still... basically Core 2 Duo for Intel is "take a P3, and add more of everything". It's doable to compete with, although with Intel spending about as much on R&D every product cycle as AMD spent to buy ATI, it's not likely they'll be standing still.
Where AMD stands to gain is from system integration... ring memory controllers on CPUs, using the Torrenza platform to start selling socketed GPUs, having system-on-a-chip designs more complex and capable than have previously existed... _________________ Official forum economist. AMI makes BIOS you probably have AMI BIOS on your motherboard right now. Though they might have gone bankrupt. I'm way too lazy to look it up and by lazy I mean that I don't care.

May I suggest AMD + ATI = A^2? _________________ "I reject your reality, and substitute my own!" - Adam Savage (MythBusters)

AMI still is in business, even if their products suck.
The new company will be just AMD, although GPUs will be sold under the ATI name. _________________ Official forum economist. Explodes when thrown.
