|
|
So by using a VirtualBox VM I was able to find a way to get OMF: BG running in it with 3D acceleration.
Steps:
1) Download/install VirtualBox
2) create XP VM; install 7zip or similar
3) download http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/4.3.6/VBoxGuestAdditions_4.3.6.iso to VM
4) extract extras from ISO
5) restart VM in safe mode, install extras
Install OMF:BG, patch, all the fun stuff. Yes, you still have to run through the stupid tutorial on first run...
As I have the editor I've started to pick apart the pilots as they're the easiest to get to. I've saved out their images, recorded their base stats/colors/bios. Google Docs spreadsheets are stupid when it comes to images so they aren't in there right now...
I only have only a half dozen or so there, but its something for reference. As for the bio author aspect, I have some docs on hand still for some unknown reason (like how I still have the patches/editor) that contains a list of all the pilots along with who's bio submission they were going forward with. In the final game, some are near copies, others are altered but have the core idea (partial credit) and others are completely different. You can choose to ignore this part, if you want. I'm leaving the doc in read-only state for now, at least until I get it to a better state.

Nice! I'm surprised that virtualbox direct3d passthrough/emulation is actually good enough to do this. |

Impressive, so it is actually possible for people to play omfbg again ?
I see that Christians text certainly has changed a bit from what I remember, and what I've seen. Also kind of funny to see that they have classified Angel as Alien :) _________________ - Jon Eirik * www.omf2097.com * www.omf2097.com/wiki * https://discord.gg/sT8YU2E <- OMF Discord |

Found some web code that'll let me pretty-fy this... I'll see what I can do. Once I get the base webcode together I'll just have to update it all in a database and it'll generate the tables. However, it also means I should get around to rebuilding my web server, which I've been putting off. _________________ I'm not crazy, I'm sanity-challenged.

Alright, I have this in a database now: http://24.84.238.79/OMF/Pilots/pilot.php
Still need to finish collecting all the pilots but everything is in place to make it do what I want to. As well, I have code to generate pilot "icons" from the data that'll be pretty and viewable.
Preview of the "quick view" version of the icon tab: _________________ I'm not crazy, I'm sanity-challenged.

Noticed there is quite a lot of pilots I've never even seen before heh.
Did notice some weird numbers, one of the pilots was listed as having 200 endurance (Dawn), don't know if it is a typo, mess up in the script or if the game just plain cheated. :)
The "pilot summary" pictures is a cool idea, though I don't think the obvious omf2097 look to them fit the omfbg theme, and I do feel they are way to large, and could perhaps be compressed a bit ? Hmm, I'm not a graphic designer by any stretch, it just seems a bit off, sorry. _________________ - Jon Eirik * www.omf2097.com * www.omf2097.com/wiki * https://discord.gg/sT8YU2E <- OMF Discord |

I'm fine with redesigning the colors etc to fit OMF:BG, I just figured I'd go with the 2097 ascetic for now. I'd likely just change the color palette
Dawn is a typo... I'll fixed it. Generated for the pilots I have done so far; I'll get the rest added by the end of the week likely.

Probably could just edit my existing post but anyways...
All pilots now added, including a few that didn't actually make it into the final game per-se.
Graphical version:
http://24.84.238.79/OMF/Pilots/
Table version:
http://24.84.238.79/OMF/Pilots/pilot.php
Fun factoids:
BIOs
***for this part I have a list of the BIOs submissions from when they requested them. Partial matches were marked when at least half of the sentences used were from the submitters' entry. Whole credit was given if all of the used bio was from their submission, excluding a few syntax changes. In these cases there was actually a *MORE* detailed bio submitted.***
- 20 of my submissions were used
- 5 of Killer Roach's submissions were used
- 3 of Spockmeat's submissions were used
- 3 of Peter's (???) submissions were used
- 2 of Juan's (???) submissions were used
- 1 of Element-Fire's submissions were used
- 19 were from DE or unknown origin
Sex
- 19 Female
- 37 Male
- 1 Undefined (Throck is the first genderless Human in a game!)
Race
- 2 aliens
- 2 animals (go go Ape-Tech/Flipper 8000!!!!)
- 2 cyborgs (one male, one female)
- 51 Humans
Other Random Factoids:
- Jeremiah is the ONLY pilot who's stats aren't divisible by 5 (12/55/75/58)
- all heroes have a total of 200 stat points _________________ I'm not crazy, I'm sanity-challenged.

Care to share your VM settings?
I'm almost up and running but get a SetupDirect3DContext() Failed error. |

If you have already downloaded and installed the extras into the VM you have to shut down the VM and turn on the 3D acceleration under the VM settings, which is what is likely causing your problems. Otherwise everything in my initial post is what I did to get it running.
I admittedly haven't had a lot of time to keep doing the data mining, but this should at least get you able to play the game. _________________ I'm not crazy, I'm sanity-challenged.

May be a useless question, but did you run the VM in fullscreen?
I just had a crash at startup because I did NOT run it in fullscreen...

Also: Yay! It runs. I can play OMF:BG again! Now if only I'd be online at a time where others are as well :-/ _________________ A wiki about klingon - the language |

No, I was running it in a window - didn't even try full screen as I was trying to do the data mining across the VM and my actual machine Which, admittedly, has come to a standstill due to me not having free time for *anything* and likely not having it for at least the next 6 months - kid #2 is due on Friday
If more people try and get VMs running though, you could try and coordinate via the IRC channel (does that still exist?) or something like that. Or stalk people on facebook/gChat. I think most of you are over in Europe though... _________________ I'm not crazy, I'm sanity-challenged.

I had updated to the latest version of VirtualBox (4.3.10, I was running 4.3.6 when I did my initial testing) and the 3D rendering seems like it's been improved a little bit. Although, I had also enabled VT-d in my BIOS so that might've helped as well... (had it disabled before). _________________ I'm not crazy, I'm sanity-challenged.
