OK. Now the board should be back to normal. Or normal enough anyway. Please let me know if something doesn't work that used to and I'll look into finding a way to fix it.

haha. It was.
Luckily, I was able to get it done without too much interruption. I needed to update the version of PHP this site was running and this board version was never meant to run on PHP 7.0 or higher. I have to change it to use mysqli and modify some other parts of the code that were using language features that were removed. But those aren't always easy to spot. Some were in Regular Expression flags which you don't know until you find them in the logs.
The good news is that I have decent logging on the site and while this site gets a lot of traffic, there aren't a ton of posts that happen all the time. The good news is that it should run for quite a while now. The each() function is deprecated which this forum software uses a LOT. So if that is removed later on, I'll have to spend a lot of time refactoring that out. It's all to preserve the forum as it is.
At least there will be about a dozen people that appreciate the effort. hahaha.

I guess another option would be to archive the existing forum, so we could look it up, but not edit/post on it, and rather start a new easier to maintain one ?

I would assume there is an export function. It should then be able to be converted & imported into any new forum software, I'd think. I'm guessing php7 might be good for a while, though, so this may never come up. Who knows?!
